A Day in the Life of Omar, a 3rd Year Learner at The Future School

This morning it is my turn to lead the teams in their Morning Chants and Ritual Dances. Today is Thursday which is a Community Partnership Day. My mother is coming in for the afternoon session to lead a sewing class. I don’t take that class. I mean, that’s my Moms’. She can teach me how to sew anytime. I am going to be working with Daily Mode Studio. Today’s focus is: How to determine what the client needs? In the spring we are going to be designing and building websites for real small businesses, families, friends, non-profits…you name it, and I want to be ready.

Our work on the website will raise money for the school and I have to do a good job. Can you imagine, I am 15 and I am designing websites for actual people! I am not worried though…my team is really strong and smart. We don’t always agree on an idea or how to solve a problem, but we talk it out and vote on it. The worst is when we can’t agree and have to go to Mr. Jones for help. That is the worst because he just listens and then instead of telling us what to do, he justs asks us questions. It is annoying, but I kinda like it because the questions help us come up with our own answers.

I have to leave my group 15 minutes early because I am a part of Chef Crew and we have to prepare lunch. For this month we decided to prepare meals that could be prepared in 10 minutes or less. That took some research, but we planned out what I think is a good menu for the month. Darren and Naomi are leading this week so they are going to tell me what to prepare. This is my first year on Chef Crew and even though it is hard work, I love it. My favorite part is when another learner tells me that they liked what we made that day. The hardest part is when they complain about the food even if they try to be nice about it.

In the afternoon I am going to work on my online Human Anatomy class with Tessa, Shaniqua and Jesus-Jay. They are helping me figure out somethings on Khan Academy, but we need to email Professor Andreas and ask him a few questions about somethings that don’t make sense to us. Also, we have to do some more work on our Human Anatomy App that we are building. We want to field test it in about 3 months, so that we can launch it by the end of the school year. We are going to sell it for $1.99. It is going to make Human Anatomy fun and easy to remember all those scientific names.

Naomi is going to lead the Closing Circle today and then I am headed home. I am tired. Did a lot of thinking today.
